Abstract
This study was undertaken in 23 cases of percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS) from April 1988 to June 1990 at Yonsei Medical Center to assess the factors affecting success rates and its limitation in our current clinical applications. The
following results were obtained.
The most common indication for PUBS was rapid karyotyping of fetal chromosomes (21 out of 23 cases).
PUBS was successful in 83% (19 of 23 cases), and according to gestational age 90% success rate was achieved in patients under 35 weeks, and 33% over 36 weeks.
The success rate according to placental location was 83% representing 10 of 12 cases for anterior lying placentas, 100% for fundal and 75% for posterior location.
The frequency of needle insertions was less than 2 times in 78% and more than 3 times in 22% of cases (5 cases), and the success rate according to puncture site was 87.5% in cord at its insertion into placenta, 100% at fetal insertion site and
lowest in
free floating umbilical cord.
